Tips on Web Hosting for Bloggers

Whether you have only recently decided to become a blogger, or have been blogging for quite some time, you will be keenly interested in what advantages a web hosting company offers you. Remember that since you are embarking on a blogging career, that you are mainly interested in features that will simplify the process of blogging or enhance it.

What are some of the most important features that bloggers look for in web hosting? Let’s start with the most important factors: web space. You need to ensure that you have enough storage space to post for years on end and that you won’t inadvertently violate any contracts. It’s not uncommon for bloggers to seek out contracts with unlimited storage space, which provides total peace of mind. In addition to web space, bandwidth is an important issue. Bandwidth refers to the amount of data transfer that is allowed every month. Most websites believe they are quite generous in providing up to 33 gigabytes of data transfer per month. However, bloggers are more impressed with unlimited bandwidth options.

In addition, bloggers might want the ability to use or install various applications on their blog, such as SSH, SSL, FTP, Stats, CGI, Perl, PHP or MySQL. Bloggers also want to have freedom to post streaming video content as well as streaming audio and other features that standard web hosting companies may not offer. It can be difficult to design your own blog using HMTL or Front Page Express. Therefore, one of the most important features for new bloggers is a drag-and-drop site builder, which gives users a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get style program to make the blog creation process very easy to follow.

Blogging can be serious business and if there is a technical problem you want to know what is happening. Therefore, there are two important features to look out for, including 24-hour technical support (and toll free at that) and 24-hour server monitoring. A 30-day satisfaction guarantee is also recommended in case you run into an unchangeable feature you simply cannot stand. Bloggers today might also demand compatibility with top programs like WordPress, B2evolution, PMachine Pro and Nucleus.

How do you know which blog hosting company offers the best deal? Read the reviews of your favorite sites and take note of the averages, noting any site that has pages of negative reviews, as well as sites that have average-to-stellar reviews. Choose carefully so that you can share your blogging knowledge with the world for many years to come.

What would you do if you couldn't track down the host of a domain ripping off your work?
A little background, and explanation of why this is so important to anyone who cares about fairness and the rule of law — and anyone whose own work has been ripped off without compensation or recourse:

It’s not uncommon for me to stumble across Web sites whose owners think they can reproduce my original articles verbatim, without permission. We’re not talking excerpts; we’re talking about stealing entire articles, which cuts into *my* traffic, and *my* livelihood.

When this happens, I usually contact the site owner and ask him/her to cut the quoting down to a reasonable few paragraphs, or pull the article in question entirely. If my request is ignored, then I report the thief to his/her Web host. That usually gets his/her attention, and either the stolen article disappears, or the entire site does.

This time, however, I can’t locate the thief’s host for a gander. A WHOIS brings up only the registrant (GoDaddy) and associated nameservers (domaincontrol.com, which belongs to GoDaddy). I have what appears to be a home address and phone for the registrant, but I’m not about to start hassling people at home over an issue that should be easily resolved through more proper channels (online).

But, honestly, most of all: From the looks of the site, the site owner appears to be the sort of person most peaceful, law-abiding folks really don’t ever want ANY contact with. Let’s just say s/he appears to be a real loose cannon — and *loaded*. Literally.

I don’t want to just let this issue go — that would and essentially be advocating theft. (Funny thing is, if you request permission to reproduce one of my articles, I usually say yes!)

By the way, it’s not just me — this site owner is reproducing articles in their entirety from both major news sources and struggling bloggers, left and right, showing no respect whatsoever for anyone’s copyright claim — or for the law, for that matter.

All I want is to have my original work removed from this thief’s site — but the thief is deliberately ignoring me.

So, does anybody have any super-duper secret tips for tracking down the host and/or ISP of a domain whose owner thinks it’s just fine to trample all over somebody else’s copyright? Or any other advice?

  2. CL Tech Solutions, Inc. says:

You can put in the domain name here: http://www.internic.com/whois.html and it will tell you who the domain name is registered to, along with contact information. You are best off contacting a lawyer at this point as well, specifically an intellectual property lawyer. I would recommend Gerry Elman, from Elman Technology Law. Let him know Tim from CL Tech Solutions, Inc. sent you.

You can find his contact information at: http://elman.com/

It would not hurt for you to give him a 5 minute call just to discuss your situation.

  3. Matt says:

I recommend you to skip contacting the owner and go directly to his host (Godaddy).
If the name servers belong to Godaddy it means that the site is hosted by Godaddy.

From http://whois.domaintools.com/ should be obvious who the owner and the host is.

You could also try http://www.whoishostingthis.com to confirm the host.
