   I’d recommend using wordpress (or blogspot). Otherwise you need to have a lot of time (and geek skills). Most people want to be able to spend their time writing their blogs, rather than being a geek just to make them work.

   I use a personal space.
   Why?
   I also rent space that I’m not using.
   Have more freedom to do whatever I want to do.
   I’m not limited by stupid rules (there are rules, but they vary from host to host… Look for one that supports free speech 😉 )

   I also know a lot of people that also have/want blogs and what I do is tell them that if they want to, I could install it and host it for them for $$.

   I also tell them that I’ll take care of upgrades and stuff but that I’ll charge them extra for it.

   Basically I pay about 45 dollars every 6 months for hosting but I make well over a hundred in those 6 months…

   Business. 😉

   Definitely host it yourself. you have the freedom and expandability that self hosting can provide. Beside most reputable host will provide tools that will make it as easy as a blogspot.

   There are benefits of both methods. Using a hosting website does have its restrictions and you only have one main advantage and this is zero cost. Whereas using your own webspace can give you far fewer restrictions, but at a cost! Providing you do not have compelling reasons you may be able to start "mid" way by using the free web space usually given by your broadband supplier. Later you can upgrade to more space, bandwidth and greater flexibility. Finally another main advantage with your own space is you can buy your own domain name and promote your site in a professinal manner.

   Host your own blog. You will be amazed at how easy it is. I teach folks how to set this up for the first time if you don’t know how to do it.

   I even recommend what companies you should use and show you how to navigate through them. Just make sure they have cPanel dashboard, this will help. Also see if they have one click install, either Simple Scripts or Fantastico, I show you how to install using both of these.

   If you’re going to start your blog at your own domain with different pages, you need a web host providing wordpress.
