How can I register domain names for my clients?
I’m from India (Chennai) I’ve planned to start a Web hosting company here. I got the server configuration and i’m going to use linux/windows. The problem is how can I register Domain Name for my Clients. If I purchase a dedicated server they provide all details but i have to pay in monthly basis but i’m not interested in dedicated servers and resellers. So I want my own server in my office. What should I do now? What is cpanel/plesk how it will help me? Where can I get cpanel/plesk?

It is never suggested to have server in office, as connectivity and speed will be not up to the mark.
You need to take a lease server in DC ( monthly payment basis ) and for booking domains be a reseller at some ICANN Accredited Registrar.
Search in google for "ICANN Accredited Registrar India"
For Linux, CPANEL is best to use. these panels helps you to create and manage hosting accounts.

As far as register, the first thing you want is a cheap .co.uk domain name. A quick search of google and I found this: http://www.uk-cheapest.co.uk/
Just register your domain name. Then you need some web space. Cheapest I know of is Hostgator which is pretty cheap. If you sign up for their baby plan you can enter the coupon code ‘1CentReview’ and get it for $0.01 for the first month, then just enter the domain you bought in step 2. Now that you have that set up, you’ll need to log in to where you registered your domain and if you log in to hostgator you will see where there are your ‘nameservers’ (along the left hand side). Copy them into the name server settings for your domain and away you go.
To move your site from Dreamweaver to your hosting account, go into DW and make a new site. In the ‘Remote’ settings select the hostname as ftp.yourdomain.co.uk and enter your username/password for hostgatr. Also, set the default folder to public_html/ and select ‘Use Passive FTP’.
Click OK (fill out any other settings you want, mainly your local web folder – the place where your files are kept on your computer). Then, on the right (or left depending on your DW set up) select the Files section, highlight all the files you want to upload and then click the arrow pointing up! It will take a little while depending on how big your files are, but after that, your site will be live!

If you signed up for your hosting through Yahoo! Small Business, and bought the Starter, Standard or Professional package, yes, you get MySQL with that.

If it is with Yahoo! Small business, it’s a *nix server. I believe Yahoo primarily hosts off FreeBSD but that shouldn’t matter unless you are getting a really, really complex install.

There is a control panel. It’s not one of those; it’s a custom designed control panel that Yahoo! set up.

Again, assuming this is a Small Business hosting account, you can run PHP. The version and config of PHP, I’m not sure about. I’m not sure the extent of control you have on being able to set file and folder permissions, but you should be able to do so via the control panel.

The short answer is, it sounds like you don’t know enough to be of help to your developer and he’s going to have to do all the heavy and the light lifting.
So, the short of it is, it makes sense for you to simply give him your user name and password and trust him not to abuse the system. Change your password once he’s done.
Again, the problem is you’re not going to be able to help yourself, so you have to trust whomever you are going to use to not screw you over. If you don’t, time to find someone else whom you do trust.

Can’t rewrite my index.htm in my public_html?
I’m using Philhosting (Linux Plan) as my host for my website. I’m using Smart FTP and FileZilla for uploading files on my ftp. Now, I cannot rewrite my index.htm on my public_html because it says that it’s a read only file, I tried changing it in the properties but still an error that says that it’s an read only file comes out. what will I do? and in my status (cpanel) my disk usage becomes .01/200.00 MB but at my last visit, i think it is already 5mb(or higher)/200mb.

I tried deleting and renaming the index.htm to trash.htm but this error comes out, "Rename/move failure: Read-only file system : /public_html//public_html/trash.htm"
first off for the most part c-panel doesn’t gauge fileuse very well.
You can try a few things to get it to work properly.
1. delete the old file replace with the new. if your cpanel allows for file management thru the web.
2. rename the old index file to somthing different and upload the new one.

okay problem maybe your ftp program itself, downloaded it and it doesnt give any info on whats on the remote server.

after downloading and installing, login to your Ftp as usual. browse to your Index.html file and right click on it. lots of options will come up go down to "chmod (unix)" by checking all the boxes there and accepting it should allow you to replace it. If it doesnt do like screaming suggested and talk to your webhost. Hope this helps
