can i design a website on wordpress and use my own hosting service?
I am having someone design my website I think he is using wordpress to design it and was wondering if use my own hosting service as I have already paid for 1 years worth of hosting?
Your hosting service probably has WordPress already to install from the cPanel. Most include it and many other programs as part of the hosting package you pay for.

Absolutely yes!
In fact your can setup anything you want on your own shared web-hosting service that doesn’t require full root access.
Think of WordPress as a "Program" that runs on the Web Server. You OR the Designer need simply to "install the program" on the web server and then apply your WordPress Skin. Most hosts provide a nice utility called Fantastico De Lux OR Softalicious. Either of these program utilities can be used to AUTOMATICALLY install the wordpress engine on your website.
Joomla, ZenCart, WordPress work fine under shared hosting. Even a few Live Chat modules work in a shared hosting environment. Again these can be easily installed using Fantastico or Softalicious.
For managing your files I highly recommend FileZilla, a free, easy to use FTP client.

Sure you can. Word press is simply the "back end" of your website. The design of your site is done with what ever theme you choose.

Yes you can. Just make sure that your hosting service has fast MySQL servers, that makes all the difference in the world.

Absolutely! Provided your hosting plan allows Worpress install – I’ve yet to come across one that doesn’t.The question is where is he currently building your site? If it’s a standard HTML site you can just send him your hosting login details so he can upload the files when they’re ready – kind of surprised he hasn’t done this already and started building on your hosting account.
If he is building with WordPress (self-hosted) – which is the better option – then it’s a little more involved as you have to move the database as well as the WordPress files, from wherever he currently has them, but not difficult. Again I’m kind of surprised that this stuff wasn’t hashed out with him prior to his starting work?

Self hosting is the way to go. From my point of view WordPress is really great. Simple to do the job with. I will recommend WordPress any day of the week.
